A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Zanobi Pignoni documenting the floats and costumed participants of a Florentine carnival procession.
This etching documents the elaborate pageantry of a Florentine carnival procession during the early seventeenth century. Zanobi Pignoni, an artist active in the Medici court, provides a systematic record of the floats and participants involved in these public spectacles. The composition is organised into distinct registers, presenting the various 'carri' or floats alongside individual figures in costume.
Each element is labelled with Italian text, identifying the specific allegorical or geographic themes represented, such as the 'Carro dell'Asia' and the 'Carro dell'Africa'. The floats are depicted with architectural detail, featuring obelisks, trees, and animal motifs, while the figures below demonstrate the variety of costumes worn by the performers. The line work is precise and descriptive, characteristic of printmaking intended for documentation rather than purely aesthetic display.
Such prints were often produced to commemorate specific festivals or royal entries, serving as a visual archive of the ephemeral decorations and performances that defined courtly life in Florence. The inclusion of numerical counts for the participants, such as '100 a pie' (100 on foot), indicates the scale of these events. The work offers a glimpse into the intersection of theatre, politics, and public celebration in the Baroque era. By capturing the temporary structures and the specific iconography of the procession, Pignoni preserves a moment of civic display that would otherwise be lost to time. The print functions as both a record of the event and a reflection of the artistic priorities of the period, where order and classification were applied even to the chaotic joy of carnival.
