Jean Achille Benouville, a recipient of the Prix de Rome in 1845, spent a significant portion of his career documenting the Italian peninsula. This work captures the rugged topography of the island of Capri, a location that drew numerous European painters during the nineteenth century. Benouville focuses on the dramatic limestone cliffs that plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, rendered with a precise attention to geological form and the specific quality of Mediterranean light.
