A detailed 16th-century etching by Léon Davent depicting the mythological birth of Arcas, rendered with the refined line work of the School of Fontainebleau.
This etching by Léon Davent depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the moment Callisto gives birth to her son, Arcas, in the woods. Davent, an active member of the School of Fontainebleau, produced this work during a period when French printmaking was heavily influenced by Italian Mannerism. The composition is structured around a central, dense cluster of trees, beneath which Callisto rests. The artist employs a delicate, linear technique to define the foliage and the undulating terrain, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye from the foreground figure towards the distant hills.
In the upper left, a figure appears within a cloud, representing a divine presence or perhaps a celestial intervention related to the narrative. The inclusion of a small animal in the middle ground adds a pastoral quality to the scene, balancing the mythological subject with elements of nature. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Arcadem in syluis peperit, hinc percita Iuno', provides the narrative context for the viewer, identifying the characters and the source of the conflict. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Davent's output, particularly in his ability to render varied textures through hatching and cross-hatching. This work reflects the interest of the Fontainebleau circle in classical mythology and their preference for integrating human figures into expansive, atmospheric settings. The print remains a representative example of the graphic arts produced in mid-sixteenth-century France, where the dissemination of classical themes through etching became a primary method for artists to engage with the broader European Renaissance tradition.
