A refined example of sixteenth-century Ottoman calligraphy by Ahmed Karahisari, featuring elegant script and gold illumination.
This work displays the mastery of Ahmed Karahisari, a figure of great importance within the Ottoman tradition of calligraphy. Karahisari, active during the sixteenth century, is known for his development of the Yaqut al-Musta'simi style, which he refined to achieve a distinct balance of proportion and fluidity. This sheet serves as a study of script forms, demonstrating the technical rigour required to execute Muhaqqaq and Thuluth scripts.
The composition is structured with a rhythmic density, where the black ink characters interact with the negative space of the paper. Small gold rosettes, known as 'shamsa', are interspersed throughout the text. These elements function as punctuation marks, providing visual pauses that guide the eye across the page. The ink work exhibits a high degree of control, with varying line weights that define the structure of each letterform. The paper itself shows signs of age, with a warm, aged tone that complements the gold accents.
Karahisari was a court calligrapher under the patronage of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. His work is often associated with the grand scale of imperial manuscripts, yet this exercise reveals the foundational practice behind such large-scale projects. The interplay between the bold, sweeping curves of the script and the delicate gold ornamentation creates a visual harmony. This piece offers a view into the disciplined training of an Ottoman master, where every stroke is calculated to maintain the integrity of the script while allowing for individual expression. The arrangement of the text is not merely functional; it is a deliberate exercise in spatial organisation, reflecting the aesthetic values of the period.
