A 1917 lithograph by Christopher Nevinson depicting the industrial labour of aircraft engine production during the First World War.
Christopher Nevinson produced this lithograph in 1917 as part of his series documenting the British war effort. The work depicts the interior of an aircraft factory, focusing on the mechanical processes required to produce engines. Nevinson employs a sharp, angular aesthetic that reflects the influence of Vorticism, a movement that sought to capture the energy and speed of the modern machine age. The composition is dominated by diagonal lines of structural beams and machinery, which create a sense of rhythmic repetition and industrial scale.
In the foreground, a worker is positioned at a lathe, his posture suggesting concentration and physical labour. The human figures are integrated into the mechanical environment, their forms echoing the geometry of the tools they operate. Nevinson uses high-contrast shading to define the metallic surfaces of the engine parts and the heavy shadows within the factory space. This approach emphasises the cold, precise nature of industrial production during the First World War.
By focusing on the factory floor, Nevinson shifts the perspective from the battlefield to the home front. The print captures the transformation of labour into a systematic, mechanised process. The artist's background as an official war artist allowed him access to these restricted environments, providing a direct observation of the industrial mobilisation that supported the military. The lithographic medium allows for a range of textures, from the smooth surfaces of the machinery to the rougher, hatched lines that define the structural supports. This work provides a clear view of the intersection between human effort and industrial technology in the early twentieth century.
