A six-panel folding screen depicting traditional Japanese Bugaku dancers against a luminous gold-leaf background, painted by Kano Yasunobu.
This six-panel folding screen depicts the traditional Japanese court dance known as Bugaku. Kano Yasunobu, a member of the influential Kano family of painters, employs the characteristic gold-leaf background that defines the aesthetic of the Edo period. This metallic surface provides a reflective, luminous field that isolates the figures, allowing the viewer to focus on the specific costumes and movements of the performers.
The composition is organised across the six panels, with the dancers distributed in groups that suggest a narrative sequence or a specific performance arrangement. To the left, a large, ornate drum stands as a marker of the musical accompaniment essential to these courtly rituals. The dancers wear elaborate robes and masks, their postures captured in mid-motion. The artist uses a precise, controlled line to define the garments, while the colour palette remains restrained, relying on deep reds, blacks, and muted greens to contrast against the brilliant gold ground.
Kano Yasunobu served as the head of the Nakabashi branch of the Kano school. His work reflects the transition from the bold, monumental styles of the Momoyama period to the more refined, decorative sensibilities favoured by the shogunate and the aristocracy during the seventeenth century. The screen functions as both a record of cultural performance and a luxury object, designed to brighten the interior of a residence or temple. The repetition of the figures creates a rhythmic quality, mirroring the structured nature of the dance itself. By placing the figures against a void of gold, the artist removes them from a specific physical location, elevating the scene into a timeless representation of courtly tradition.
