A refined lithographic portrait of the legendary figure Brunhilde, produced by the renowned Parisian printing house Lemercier & Cie.
This lithograph, produced by the Parisian firm Lemercier & Cie., depicts the figure of Brunhilde, a central character from Germanic heroic legend and the Nibelungenlied. The print captures the subject in profile, wearing a helmet and armour, which suggests her status as a valkyrie or warrior maiden. The technical execution relies on the tonal capabilities of lithography, using soft gradations of grey to model the face and the metallic sheen of the headgear.
Lemercier & Cie. operated as one of the most prominent printing houses in nineteenth-century France. They collaborated with numerous artists to translate paintings and drawings into mass-produced prints, often employing skilled lithographers to replicate the texture of charcoal or pencil sketches. This particular work demonstrates the firm's ability to maintain a delicate balance between light and shadow, creating a sense of atmospheric depth around the figure. The background remains largely suggested, allowing the focus to remain on the stoic expression of the subject.
Such prints were common in the late nineteenth century, providing the public with access to mythological and literary themes that were popular in contemporary theatre and opera. The rendering of the helmet and the subtle shading on the cheekbone reveal a high level of craftsmanship, typical of the studio's output during its peak years. The work functions as a study in characterisation, stripping away extraneous detail to present a singular, iconic representation of the legendary figure. It is a representative example of the commercial print culture that flourished in Paris, bridging the gap between fine art and accessible illustration for the burgeoning middle-class collector.
