Beschreibung
A detailed oil portrait of a shepherd dog by French realist painter Rosa Bonheur, dated 1864.
Rosa Bonheur, a French painter known for her precise observation of animals, produced this portrait of Brizo in 1864. The work captures the head and shoulders of a shaggy shepherd dog against a muted, earthy background. Bonheur applied paint with a focus on the texture of the animal's coat, using varied brushwork to distinguish between the coarse, wiry fur on the crown of the head and the softer, longer hair around the ears and chest.
The composition is direct, placing the subject in a frontal position that allows the viewer to focus on the dog's expression. The artist used a palette of ochre, brown, and muted green, which reflects her interest in naturalistic representation. The name 'BRISO' is inscribed in the upper right corner, while the artist's initials and the date appear in the lower right. This piece demonstrates Bonheur's technical ability to convey the character of a specific animal through careful attention to anatomical detail and light.
Bonheur spent much of her career studying animals in their natural environments, often visiting slaughterhouses and livestock markets to ensure accuracy in her depictions. Her approach to animal portraiture moved away from the sentimental style common in the nineteenth century, favouring a more objective, scientific observation. This portrait of Brizo is a clear example of her disciplined method, where the subject is rendered with a high degree of fidelity to its physical form. The work remains a representative example of her mid-career output, during which she achieved international recognition for her skill in capturing the spirit and physical presence of domestic and wild creatures alike.
