Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. Painted in 1914, 'Breakfast' demonstrates his methodical approach to the movement. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this work employs a clearer structure where distinct planes overlap to reconstruct the objects of a morning meal.

The composition features a table surface viewed from multiple angles simultaneously. Gris incorporates everyday items, such as cups, saucers, and a newspaper, into a geometric arrangement. The inclusion of the newspaper fragment, marked with the artist's name, serves as a signature element common in his practice. The colour palette is restrained, relying on ochres, browns, and whites to define the forms, while a bold blue background provides a sharp contrast that pushes the table forward in the visual field.

Gris was known for his mathematical precision and his ability to balance the abstract requirements of Cubism with recognisable subject matter.
