Frans Jansz. Post was a Dutch painter who travelled to Brazil in 1637 as part of the expedition led by Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen. During his time in South America, he produced a series of works documenting the geography, flora, and colonial settlements of the region. This painting depicts the village of Igaraçú, featuring the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian on the left side of the composition.

The work displays the characteristic approach of Post, who combined European painting techniques with the specific light and terrain of the Brazilian coast. The composition is balanced, with a low horizon line that allows for an expansive sky, a common feature in Dutch painting of the seventeenth century.
