Beschreibung
A striking example of Neo-Primitivism by Natalia Goncharova, featuring a boy and a rooster rendered in bold, simplified forms and a distinctively modern palette.
Natalia Goncharova, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, produced this work during her Neo-Primitivist period. This movement sought to move away from Western European academic traditions, drawing instead upon Russian folk art, icon painting, and the raw aesthetic of lubok prints. The composition features a young boy carrying a rooster, a subject that reflects the artist's interest in rural life and the simplicity of peasant existence.
The visual language employed here is direct and unadorned. Goncharova uses bold, simplified forms and a flattened perspective, which removes the illusion of depth in favour of a graphic, decorative quality. The figures are defined by strong outlines, and the colour palette is limited to a few saturated tones: deep blues, earthy browns, and stark whites. The background, consisting of stylised houses and trees, is rendered with the same lack of traditional modelling as the central figures, creating a unified, rhythmic surface.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise modern European stylistic developments, such as Fauvism and Cubism, with the visual heritage of her native Russia. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Goncharova focuses on the essential character of the subjects. The rooster, with its sharp, angular plumage, echoes the geometric treatment of the boy's clothing and the surrounding architecture. This approach was characteristic of her output during the early 1910s, a period when she was actively exploring the intersection between traditional craft and modern art. The resulting image possesses a quiet, monumental quality, typical of her engagement with the rustic themes that occupied her during these years.
