A 1951 lithograph by British artist Michael Ayrton, depicting a youth carrying a lamb in a style reminiscent of classical sculpture.
Michael Ayrton, a versatile British artist, produced this lithograph in 1951. The work captures a youth carrying a lamb across his shoulders, a motif that echoes the classical iconography of the Kriophoros. Ayrton employs a dense, textured approach to the ink, creating a dark, atmospheric background that contrasts with the lighter forms of the figures. The composition is contained within a rectangular frame, yet the surrounding paper includes additional sketches and annotations, typical of a trial sheet or proof.
The artist's interest in mythology and the human form is evident here. The physical weight of the animal is suggested through the posture of the boy, whose head is turned away from the viewer. The lines are varied, moving from the heavy, cross-hatched shadows of the background to the delicate, precise outlines of the supplementary sketches at the bottom of the sheet. These peripheral drawings, including a hand and a profile, provide insight into the artist's process, showing how he worked through anatomical details before finalising the central image.
Ayrton was associated with the Neo-Romantic movement, which often looked back to pastoral themes and classical subjects, reinterpreting them through a mid-twentieth-century lens. This print demonstrates his technical skill in lithography, using the medium to achieve a range of tones that mimic the qualities of charcoal or ink wash. The inclusion of the date and the 'Trial Sheet II' inscription adds a documentary quality to the piece, inviting the viewer to engage with the work as both a finished image and a record of artistic development. The stark black and white palette focuses attention on the sculptural quality of the figures, reflecting Ayrton's broader practice as a sculptor and painter.
