A detailed Renaissance engraving by Nicoletto da Modena, featuring a goblet adorned with classical grotesque figures and scrolling foliage.
This engraving by Nicoletto da Modena presents a design for a decorative goblet, a form that reflects the Renaissance fascination with classical antiquity and the revival of grotesque ornament. The artist, active in the early sixteenth century, was known for his prints that circulated motifs among craftsmen, goldsmiths, and architects. The vessel is rendered with precise, clean lines, typical of the period's printmaking techniques, which allowed for the dissemination of complex decorative schemes across Europe.
The goblet itself is a study in symmetry and imaginative detail. The central body of the vessel features a winged creature, a hybrid figure that emerges from acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage. Below this, a bearded mask provides a base for the upper section, while the foot of the goblet is supported by smaller winged figures. These motifs, known as grotesques, were inspired by the wall paintings discovered in the ruins of the Domus Aurea in Rome. By incorporating these elements into functional objects, artists like Nicoletto da Modena bridged the gap between fine art and applied design.
The composition is balanced and contained within a clear outline, suggesting its purpose as a model for metalwork or ceramic production. The shading is achieved through delicate hatching, which gives the object a sense of volume and tactile quality. This print is a clear example of how Renaissance artists adapted ancient Roman decorative vocabularies to suit contemporary tastes. It remains a valuable record of the period's aesthetic priorities, where the boundary between the natural and the fantastical was frequently blurred in the service of ornamentation. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its status as a significant piece of early print culture.
