Gustave Loiseau, a French painter associated with the later generation of Impressionists, frequently turned his attention to the banks of the Seine. In this work, he captures the quiet atmosphere of Oissel, a commune situated along the river in Normandy. The composition focuses on the interplay between the water and the rising hills, rendered through the artist's signature cross-hatching technique. This method of applying paint in small, rhythmic strokes creates a textured surface that captures the shifting light of the day.
Loiseau was deeply influenced by the work of Camille Pissarro and Paul Gauguin, yet he developed a distinct approach to his subjects. Rather than seeking the fleeting, momentary effects favoured by earlier Impressionists, Loiseau often returned to the same locations under different atmospheric conditions. This repetition allowed him to study the subtle changes in colour and tone across the seasons. In this particular view, the palette is dominated by cool blues and greens, which contrast with the warmer, hazy light of the sky.
