Gustave Caillebotte painted this work during a period of intense focus on the Yerres river, where his family owned a property. The composition places the viewer directly inside the skiff, creating an immediate sense of proximity to the two figures. The rower in the foreground, seen from behind, wears a light-coloured shirt that contrasts with the deep blue attire of the man facing him.
Caillebotte employs a distinct perspective, using the wooden oars and the boat's interior to frame the scene.
