A post-impressionist study of the Scottish Highlands by Samuel Peploe, featuring bold brushwork and a cool, tonal palette.
Samuel Peploe, a member of the Scottish Colourists, produced this work during a period of intense focus on the Highland scenery of Scotland. The painting depicts the wooded area near Boat of Garten, a village in the Cairngorms. Peploe employs a structured approach to the composition, using bold, rhythmic brushwork to define the forms of the trees against the sky. His palette is restricted, relying on cool blues, deep teals, and stark whites to capture the quality of light filtering through the canopy.
Unlike his earlier, more tonal works, this piece demonstrates the influence of French modernism on his practice. The paint is applied with confidence, creating a sense of movement within the foliage. The shadows on the ground are rendered with flat, dark blocks of colour, which contrast with the lighter, more textured application of paint on the tree trunks and leaves. This technique flattens the pictorial space, drawing attention to the surface of the canvas rather than attempting a traditional illusion of depth.
Peploe often returned to the same subjects to refine his understanding of light and structure. In this instance, the trees act as a frame for the composition, guiding the eye through the scene. The lack of fine detail allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the dark, silhouetted forms and the bright patches of sky visible between the branches. This work represents a mature phase in Peploe's career, where his interest in colour theory and formal composition reached a balance. It remains a clear example of his ability to translate the rugged Scottish terrain into a modern, expressive visual language.
