A large-scale abstract work by Sam Francis, featuring fluid, cell-like blue forms suspended against a stark white ground.
Sam Francis, an American painter associated with the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, produced this work during a period when his practice shifted towards large-scale, open compositions. The painting features organic, cell-like forms suspended against a stark, white ground. These shapes, rendered in varying shades of blue, range from deep, saturated indigo to lighter, translucent washes. The application of paint involves fluid, gestural movements, with visible drips and splatters that suggest the physical process of creation.
Francis spent significant time in Paris and Tokyo, and his work often reflects a synthesis of Western gestural abstraction and Eastern concepts of space. Unlike the dense, all-over compositions of some of his contemporaries, this piece emphasises the void. The white space is not merely a background but an active element that interacts with the blue forms. The composition avoids a central focus, allowing the eye to move across the canvas, tracing the relationships between the floating shapes. The edges of these forms are soft, created by thin layers of pigment that bleed into the raw canvas or overlap with neighbouring colours.
This approach to colour and space is characteristic of his mature style, where he moved away from the monochromatic experiments of his earlier years. The work demonstrates his interest in the luminosity of paint, achieved through the layering of thin glazes. By allowing the white of the canvas to remain visible, he creates a sense of light emanating from within the painting. The result is a composition that feels both expansive and contained, balancing the energy of the brushwork with a sense of calm. This print captures the subtle gradations of blue and the specific texture of the original oil paint, maintaining the clarity of the forms against the negative space.
