Beschreibung
A minimalist abstract work from Sam Francis's 1960s series, featuring organic blue forms suspended in a vast, white space.
Blue Balls VIII is a representative example of the series Sam Francis produced between 1960 and 1962. During this period, the artist was confined to a hospital bed in Bern, Switzerland, due to a severe bout of renal tuberculosis. This physical limitation necessitated a shift in his practice, moving away from the large-scale canvases he was known for towards smaller, more intimate works on paper.
The series is defined by a sparse, white ground that functions as an active element rather than a passive background. Floating within this void are organic, cellular forms rendered in shades of blue, punctuated by occasional lines of red or black. These shapes suggest biological structures, reminiscent of microscopic organisms or anatomical diagrams. The application of paint is fluid, with drips and washes that reveal the physical properties of the medium. The composition avoids traditional balance, instead relying on the tension between the isolated clusters of colour and the expansive negative space.
Francis was influenced by his time spent in Japan and his interest in Zen philosophy, which is evident in the economy of his marks. The Blue Balls series marks a transition in his career, reflecting a period of introspection and physical fragility. The works are not merely decorative, but rather a direct response to his environment and his internal state during his recovery. The interplay between the solid blue masses and the delicate, linear elements creates a sense of suspension. This print captures the specific materiality of the original gouache, preserving the transparency of the washes and the deliberate placement of each form against the stark white paper.
