A chiaroscuro woodcut from 1757 by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, depicting a solitary beggar with expressive line work and tonal depth.
Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, also known as Dietricy, was a prolific artist active in Dresden during the mid-eighteenth century. He held a position as court painter to Augustus III of Poland, Elector of Saxony. His output included paintings, drawings, and a significant body of etchings and woodcuts that demonstrate his technical versatility. This work, dated 1757, is a chiaroscuro woodcut, a technique that uses multiple blocks to create tonal variations and depth through light and shadow.
The subject is a solitary figure, a blind beggar, rendered with expressive, calligraphic lines. The composition is stark, focusing on the physical condition of the man as he sits with his staff and a small vessel. The use of a limited, earthy palette is characteristic of the chiaroscuro method, which relies on the interaction between the printed ink and the paper tone to define form. The figure is depicted with a sense of immediacy, his posture suggesting weariness and hardship. The background is minimal, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the textures of the clothing and the rough ground.
Dietrich was known for his ability to mimic the styles of earlier masters, particularly those from the Dutch and Flemish schools. This print reflects his interest in genre subjects, which were popular among collectors of the period. The work displays his command of the woodcut medium, balancing bold outlines with subtle shading. It is a clear example of the graphic arts in the mid-eighteenth century, where artists experimented with printmaking techniques to achieve painterly effects. The presence of the artist's monogram and the date provides a precise historical anchor for this piece, which remains a representative example of his graphic work.
