A Renaissance engraving by Benedetto Montagna depicting the mythological birth of Adonis from a myrrh tree, rendered with precise linear detail.
Benedetto Montagna, an engraver and painter active in Vicenza, produced this work during the early sixteenth century. The engraving depicts the mythological birth of Adonis, who emerges from the trunk of a myrrh tree. This narrative, derived from Ovid's Metamorphoses, shows the infant being received by figures in contemporary Renaissance dress. The composition reflects the influence of Northern European printmaking on Italian artists of the period, particularly in the treatment of the tree bark and the linear precision of the drapery.
The scene is set within a coastal environment, featuring a distant town and rocky outcrops. Montagna employs a clear, descriptive line to define the forms, prioritising clarity of narrative over atmospheric effects. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner across the foreground, while the tree acts as a vertical anchor for the composition. The artist's signature, 'BENEDETO MONTAGNA', is placed prominently in the upper left corner, a common practice for printmakers of the era to establish authorship in a medium that allowed for wide distribution.
Technically, the work demonstrates the characteristic cross-hatching and parallel strokes used by Italian engravers to suggest volume and shadow. The figures wear garments typical of the early sixteenth century, grounding the classical subject matter in the artist's own time. The contrast between the smooth skin of the figures and the textured, gnarled surface of the tree provides a visual balance. This print offers insight into the circulation of classical themes in Renaissance Italy and the technical development of engraving as a medium for artistic expression. It remains a representative example of the Vicentine school, showing the intersection of classical literary tradition and the visual language of the Italian Renaissance.
