A refined kacho-ga study by Gan Ku, featuring two birds perched upon a blossoming plum tree with red camellias.
This work by Gan Ku, the founder of the Kishi school in Kyoto, demonstrates the precise observation and technical control characteristic of his practice. The composition features a plum tree, its branches rendered with textured, gnarled brushwork, extending vertically across the silk surface. White blossoms emerge from the dark wood, providing a contrast to the deep green leaves and the striking red camellia flowers positioned lower on the trunk.
Two birds are the focus of the scene. The upper bird, a long-tailed specimen with blue-grey plumage and a distinct crest, perches with its body angled towards the upper reaches of the tree. A second, smaller bird rests on a lower branch, its gaze directed upwards. Gan Ku utilised a refined palette, balancing the muted, earthy tones of the silk background with the saturated red of the flowers and the subtle blue accents on the birds. The artist's signature and red seals are visible on the left side, confirming the work as a product of his studio.
Gan Ku was known for his ability to synthesise traditional Japanese ink painting techniques with elements of Chinese naturalism. His approach to bird-and-flower painting, or kacho-ga, moved away from purely decorative stylisation towards a more grounded representation of nature. The attention to the texture of the bark and the anatomical accuracy of the birds reflect his interest in direct observation. This print captures the quiet stillness of the original silk painting, maintaining the balance between the negative space of the background and the detailed rendering of the flora and fauna. It is a representative example of the Kishi school aesthetic, which remained influential in Kyoto throughout the late Edo period.
