A refined bird-and-flower painting by Shen Quan, capturing the essence of summer through precise brushwork and a balanced, naturalistic composition.
This work is part of a series depicting the seasonal cycles through the lens of traditional Chinese bird-and-flower painting. Shen Quan, a master of the Zhe School, demonstrates his technical precision in the rendering of flora and fauna. The composition centres on a weathered scholar's rock, a common motif in Chinese art that represents stability and the natural world. Surrounding this structure are flowering branches and small birds, executed with fine brushwork that captures the texture of feathers and the delicate structure of petals.
The colour palette remains grounded in earth tones, with the silk support providing a warm, aged background that unifies the composition. The red blossoms provide a controlled contrast against the muted greens and browns of the foliage and stone. Shen Quan was known for his influence on the Nagasaki School in Japan, and this piece reflects the meticulous observation and balanced arrangement that defined his output during the mid-eighteenth century.
In the upper right corner, the calligraphic inscription provides context for the work, a standard practice in classical Chinese painting that integrates text with the visual image. The balance between the solid, porous rock and the airy, organic growth of the plants creates a sense of harmony. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of each element. This print captures the subtle gradations of ink and pigment, preserving the original's quiet observation of nature. It is a representative example of the academic style that prioritised both technical skill and the symbolic resonance of the natural subjects depicted.
