Bird on a Branch - Kenkō Shōkei

Kenkō Shōkei, a monk-painter active during the Muromachi period, produced this ink wash study of a bird perched upon a gnarled branch. As a practitioner of the Zen tradition, Shōkei utilised the 'haboku' or splashed ink technique, which relies upon the economy of brushwork to convey form and atmosphere. The composition is sparse, allowing the negative space of the paper to suggest the surrounding air and depth.

The bird is rendered with subtle gradations of ink, moving from the dark, concentrated tones of the plumage to the lighter, diluted washes that define the branch.
