Beschreibung
Billinge Hill in Merseyside catches warm light on a square stone beacon, with yellow gorse and golden grass above a patchwork of distant fields and town roofs.
Billinge Hill rises to 179 metres in St Helens and is the highest point in Merseyside. Its summit beacon was built in 1788 as a landmark for shipping and also served as a summerhouse. Clear conditions reveal views across Lancashire and towards more distant uplands.
A square sandstone tower stands on the right, its blocked window set below a projecting stone hood. Yellow gorse surrounds the base and spreads across the nearest grass. Below, red town roofs and a narrow church spire appear between dark trees, followed by green fields and blue hills beneath gold-edged clouds in late summer light.
