Beschreibung
A classic Op Art screenprint by Victor Vasarely, featuring a distorted grid that creates the illusion of three-dimensional depth.
Biadan is a representative example of the optical experiments conducted by Victor Vasarely during the mid-twentieth century. As a primary figure in the development of Op Art, Vasarely sought to create visual experiences that relied upon the physiological response of the viewer to geometric arrangements. This work utilises a strict grid system, which the artist subjects to systematic distortion to suggest three-dimensional volume on a two-dimensional surface.
The composition consists of a monochromatic field where a precise network of white lines intersects against a black background. By manipulating the spacing and curvature of these lines, Vasarely creates the illusion of convex and concave forms emerging from the flat plane. These distortions appear to shift or pulsate when viewed, a characteristic effect of the artist's kinetic approach to static imagery. The work avoids representational subject matter, focusing instead on the mathematical relationships between line, space, and perception.
Vasarely often employed such rigorous structures to remove the artist's hand from the final output, favouring a mechanical precision that aligned with his interest in industrial production and universal visual language. The absence of colour serves to clarify the structural logic of the piece, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the interplay of light and shadow created by the grid's deformation. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to transform a simple geometric unit into a complex visual field, challenging the stability of the viewer's perception through calculated repetition and variation.
