A detailed study of the Lamentation of Christ, rendered in pen and brown ink by the Dutch Renaissance artist Aertgen Claesz. van Leyden.
This drawing, attributed to the Dutch artist Aertgen Claesz. van Leyden, depicts the Lamentation of Christ. The composition focuses on the emotional aftermath of the Crucifixion, showing the body of Christ supported by mourners. The artist employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the figures, using hatching to suggest volume and shadow within the drapery. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive gestures characteristic of the Northern Renaissance style.
The scene is set against a sparse background, which directs attention to the central group. A ladder, a traditional instrument of the Passion, is visible behind the figures, providing a vertical element that balances the horizontal arrangement of the mourning group. The artist captures the grief of the figures through their facial expressions and body language, particularly in the woman with arms raised and the figure seated to the right, who appears to be weeping. The drawing demonstrates a mastery of ink technique, with varying line weights used to create depth and texture.
Aertgen Claesz. van Leyden was active in Leiden during the early sixteenth century. His work is often associated with the influence of Lucas van Leyden, yet he maintained a distinct approach to figure construction and narrative. This study reflects the period's interest in humanising religious subjects, moving away from rigid iconographic traditions toward a more emotive representation of biblical events. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece. As a preparatory study or an independent work on paper, it offers a direct view into the artist's process and stylistic concerns. The composition remains balanced despite the intensity of the subject matter, showing the artist's ability to organise complex emotional scenes within a confined space.
