Beta Upsilon - Morris Louis

A classic example of Morris Louis's Unfurled series, featuring cascading bands of colour on raw canvas.

Beta Upsilon is a representative example of the Unfurled series by Morris Louis, produced in 1960. This work consists of two distinct groupings of colour bands that cascade from the upper corners towards the centre of the canvas, leaving a vast, unpainted expanse of white space between them. Louis achieved this effect by pouring thinned Magna paint directly onto unprimed canvas, allowing the pigment to soak into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface.

The resulting bands of colour possess a fluid, gravity-driven quality. The edges of these streams are soft, demonstrating the interaction between the liquid medium and the raw fabric. By restricting the colour to the periphery, Louis shifts the focus to the void in the middle. This composition forces the viewer to consider the relationship between the painted elements and the negative space, which functions as an active component of the work.

Louis was a member of the Washington Color School, a group of artists who prioritised the optical properties of colour over the gestural brushwork associated with earlier abstract styles. His technique removes the evidence of the artist's hand, creating a surface that appears almost printed or stained. The choice of Magna, an acrylic resin paint, allowed for a specific level of transparency and flow that traditional oil paints could not replicate. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the physical properties of paint and the potential for colour to define space without the need for traditional perspective or figurative subjects.
