An educational Dutch woodcut print from the nineteenth century, depicting the various stages of agricultural labour through eight narrative panels.
This woodcut print, produced in Amsterdam by Schalekamp en van de Grampel, serves as an educational tool for children. The title, which translates to 'Observe this print, oh youth! how the farming class, through tireless industry, brings much benefit to the land', sets the moral and didactic tone of the work. The composition is divided into eight distinct panels, each depicting a specific stage of agricultural life, from ploughing and sowing to milking, haymaking, and winter transport.
The visual style is characteristic of nineteenth-century Dutch popular prints, which were often sold as broadsides or educational sheets. The lines are direct and functional, prioritising clarity over fine detail to ensure the narrative of the farmer's labour is easily understood by a young audience. Each panel is accompanied by a rhyming Dutch couplet that explains the scene, reinforcing the connection between human effort, the bounty of the earth, and divine providence.
Technically, the work displays the limitations and charm of woodblock printing from the period. The figures are rendered with simple gestures, and the backgrounds feature schematic representations of rural architecture and topography.
