Beschreibung
A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, capturing the Benten Shrine at Inokashira Pond.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The composition depicts the Benten Shrine situated on a small island within the Inokashira Pond, a location known for its natural beauty on the outskirts of Edo. Hiroshige employs a high vantage point to survey the expanse of the water, which is punctuated by small clusters of trees and reeds.
The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of the bokashi technique, a method of colour gradation used here to transition the sky from a deep indigo at the top to a pale, warm glow near the horizon. This atmospheric effect suggests the time of day, likely dusk or dawn, and provides a sense of depth that draws the eye across the pond towards the distant, silhouetted mountains. The Benten Shrine itself is rendered with precise detail in the lower left corner, connected to the shore by a small arched bridge. A lone figure walks across this bridge, providing a sense of scale to the quiet, rural setting.
As a late work in Hiroshige's career, this print reflects the shift in Ukiyo-e towards more atmospheric and poetic representations of the Japanese countryside. The use of a limited, balanced palette allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the man-made structure of the shrine and the surrounding natural elements. The print is a characteristic example of the series, which sought to document the changing face of Edo and its surrounding provinces during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. The clean lines and deliberate spatial arrangement are typical of Hiroshige's approach to woodblock printing, where the physical constraints of the medium are used to create a sense of calm and order.
