Vasily Polenov painted this work during his travels to the Middle East in 1882. This journey was undertaken to gather material for his ambitious cycle of paintings depicting the life of Christ. While the primary goal was religious narrative, Polenov produced a series of studies that captured the light, architecture, and atmosphere of the region with great precision.

The composition focuses on a coastal structure, likely a traditional dwelling, positioned near the water.
