A traditional Chinese ink wash painting by Li Shizhuo, featuring gnarled pine trees and misty mountain peaks in the Shan Shui style.
Li Shizhuo, a member of the Qing Dynasty literati, produced this ink work in the traditional Shan Shui style. The composition focuses on the interplay between solid rock formations and the ethereal quality of mist, a common theme in Chinese ink painting. The artist employs a variety of brush techniques to differentiate the textures of the gnarled pine trees in the foreground from the distant, looming mountain peaks.
The work is characterised by its restrained palette, relying entirely on the tonal variations of ink wash to create depth and atmosphere. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions at the top of the scroll provides context, linking the visual imagery to the poetic traditions favoured by the scholar-official class of the period. The figure depicted in the lower section serves as a scale reference, inviting the viewer to imagine a journey through this quiet, mountainous terrain.
Li Shizhuo was known for his technical proficiency and his adherence to the stylistic principles established by earlier masters. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance negative space with detailed ink work, ensuring that the mist appears to circulate through the valleys and around the crags. The paper surface retains a subtle warmth, which complements the monochrome ink application. This print captures the delicate balance of the original, preserving the brushwork and the specific character of the ink wash. It is a representative example of 18th-century Chinese ink painting, where the focus remains on the internalised experience of nature rather than a literal depiction of a specific location.
