A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting three elegant women enjoying an autumn day beneath a maple tree.
Torii Kiyonaga was a master of the ukiyo-e genre, particularly known for his depictions of tall, graceful figures. This print belongs to the series A Collection of Contemporary Beauties of the Pleasure Quarters, which captures the refined atmosphere of Edo-period social life. The composition features three women positioned beneath the boughs of a maple tree, their forms elongated and poised in a manner characteristic of Kiyonaga's mature style.
The central figure stands with a pipe, while her companions engage with the autumn setting. One woman holds a maple leaf, drawing attention to the seasonal theme, while the other adjusts her hair. The artist employs a balanced use of colour, with the muted tones of the kimonos contrasting against the soft pinks of the maple foliage. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to rest entirely upon the interaction and posture of the subjects.
Kiyonaga's work during the 1780s moved away from the more doll-like proportions seen in earlier ukiyo-e prints. Instead, he introduced a sense of physical presence and naturalistic movement. The lines are clean and precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the delicate features of the women with clarity. This print provides a view into the aesthetic values of the period, where fashion, gesture, and the changing seasons were central to the artistic output of the Torii school. The print is a fine example of the technical skill involved in multi-block woodcut production, where each colour layer is registered with precision to create a cohesive image.
