William James Glackens, a founding member of the Ashcan School, shifted his artistic focus during the later stages of his career toward a style heavily influenced by French Impressionism. The composition is populated by figures in period dress, scattered across the sand in various states of relaxation. To the left, a gazebo provides a structural anchor, while a covered pier extends into the water on the right. Glackens employs a soft, pastel-heavy palette, moving away from the darker, grittier urban subjects that defined his earlier output.
