Battledore and Shuttlecock - Ryūryūkyo Shinsai

This work is a fine example of a surimono, a genre of privately commissioned Japanese woodblock prints. Unlike commercial prints produced for the mass market, surimono were created for small circles of poets and connoisseurs. They often feature a combination of high-quality printing techniques, such as embossing or metallic pigments, alongside kyōka, which are humorous thirty-one-syllable poems.

Ryūryūkyo Shinsai was a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai and is recognised for his refined approach to these intimate compositions. The subject depicts a battledore (hagoita) and a shuttlecock, items traditionally associated with the New Year season in Japan. The battledore is decorated with a delicate floral motif, rendered with subtle colour washes that contrast against the plain, textured paper background. The shuttlecock sits nearby, its petals painted in muted tones of red and blue.

Surimono prints frequently served as New Year greetings or announcements for poetry gatherings. The calligraphy integrated into the composition is not merely decorative; it provides context for the occasion, linking the visual imagery to the literary interests of the patron. The composition is balanced and sparse, allowing the viewer to appreciate the quality of the paper and the precision of the woodblock carving. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the intersection of visual art and literature formed a central part of cultural life for the urban elite. The work remains a quiet observation of seasonal tradition, captured through the technical mastery of the ukiyo-e school.
