A detailed woodcut by Wolf Traut depicting the 1513 Battle of Guinegate, featuring cavalry, infantry, and early artillery in a classic Northern Renaissance style.
This woodcut by Wolf Traut depicts the Battle of Guinegate, also known as the Battle of the Spurs, which occurred in 1513. Traut, a member of the Nuremberg school and a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer, captures the chaotic energy of early sixteenth-century warfare. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the upper section contains a block of German text in Gothic script, while the lower section presents a dense, active scene of cavalry and infantry engagement.
The visual narrative focuses on the clash between mounted knights and foot soldiers. Traut employs a high vantage point to organise the melee, allowing the viewer to observe the movement of pikes, the positioning of artillery in the foreground, and the banners held aloft by the combatants. In the background, a fortified town sits beneath rolling hills, providing a sense of place for the conflict. The artist uses a system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the metallic surfaces of armour and the textures of the terrain.
Traut was active in the workshop of Dürer and contributed to major imperial projects, including the Triumphal Arch of Maximilian I. His work often reflects the technical precision associated with German printmaking of this period. The woodcut medium requires a disciplined approach to line work, and here, Traut demonstrates a clear command of form despite the crowded nature of the scene. The inclusion of text at the top suggests this print was intended for a broad audience, perhaps as a news broadsheet or a commemorative illustration of the victory. The print provides a window into the military technology and visual culture of the early modern period, documenting the transition from medieval combat styles to the use of heavy artillery on the battlefield.
