Arshile Gorky, born Vostanig Manoug Adoian, created this work during a period of intense stylistic transition. By 1936, Gorky was moving away from the direct influence of European modernists like Picasso and Miró, beginning to develop the biomorphic, fluid vocabulary that would define his later career. This composition displays the early stages of his interest in organic forms and mythic narratives, filtered through a surrealist lens.
The visual field is dominated by a textured, pale yellow ground that provides a stark contrast to the dark, graphic shapes distributed across the surface. These forms are not representational in a traditional sense, yet they suggest figures or totemic objects engaged in a struggle. The application of paint is deliberate, with thick impasto in certain areas creating a tactile quality that interacts with the light. The palette is restricted, relying on the interplay between the warm ochre background, deep blacks, and sharp accents of red and violet.
