A delicate seventeenth-century Dutch study featuring figures in a pastoral setting, rendered in pen and watercolour.
This work by Dirck van der Lisse depicts a group of female figures gathered near a rocky outcrop by a stream. The composition focuses on the interaction between the figures and their natural surroundings. Van der Lisse, a student of Cornelis van Poelenburch, adopted the Italianate style common among Dutch painters of the seventeenth century. This approach often involved the placement of mythological or pastoral figures within an idealised, sun-drenched setting.
The drawing employs delicate pen work to define the contours of the figures, while the application of watercolour provides soft tonal variations across the skin and the surrounding terrain. The palette remains restrained, relying on earth tones, ochres, and muted blues to suggest the atmosphere of a quiet, secluded spot. The figures are arranged in a relaxed, informal manner, typical of the artist's interest in pastoral themes.
Van der Lisse was active in The Hague, where he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke. His output frequently featured small-scale figures set against expansive, airy backgrounds. This particular study demonstrates his ability to balance human form with the broader environment. The light source appears consistent, casting gentle shadows that give volume to the figures without overwhelming the composition. The work reflects the broader interest in classical subjects that occupied many Dutch artists during this period, though it maintains a distinct, personal touch in the handling of the ink and wash. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, providing a clear view of the artist's initial marks and subsequent colour application.
