André Derain, a central figure in the development of early twentieth-century French art, produced this work during a period of transition. Moving away from the pure, explosive colour of his earlier Fauvist experiments, Derain began to incorporate more structured, geometric forms. This shift reflects his engagement with the work of Paul Cézanne and the emerging influence of Primitivism.

The composition features a group of female figures situated within a dense, abstracted environment. The figures are rendered with simplified, elongated anatomy, prioritising rhythmic arrangement over anatomical precision. Derain employs a palette dominated by earthy tones, deep greens, and flashes of intense blue, which serve to unify the figures with their surroundings. The brushwork is deliberate and heavy, creating a textured surface that emphasises the physical presence of the paint.

Unlike the more naturalistic depictions of bathers found in nineteenth-century academic painting, this work focuses on the formal relationships between the bodies and the space they occupy.
