Louis Hayet was a significant figure within the Neo-Impressionist circle, maintaining close associations with Georges Seurat and Camille Pissarro during the late 1880s. This work captures the Oise river, a recurring subject for artists working in the vicinity of Pontoise. Hayet employs the technique of pointillism, applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas to construct the image. By placing complementary hues side by side, he achieves an optical mixture that creates a luminous, atmospheric quality.
The composition is defined by a soft, morning light that diffuses across the water and the surrounding vegetation. The palette is restrained, favouring pale blues, soft pinks, and muted greens that evoke the stillness of dawn. Unlike the more rigid, scientific application of dots seen in some of his contemporaries, Hayet’s brushwork retains a degree of fluidity. This allows the water to appear reflective and the sky to possess a sense of depth, despite the systematic nature of the paint application.
Hayet’s interest in the scientific theories of colour perception is evident here, yet the work remains grounded in the observation of the natural world. The riverbank, the sparse trees, and the calm surface of the water are rendered with a focus on light and tone rather than precise detail.
