A classic Bunjinga ink wash painting by Yanagisawa Kien, featuring bamboo and rocks rendered with expressive, calligraphic brushwork.
Yanagisawa Kien, also known as Ryū Rikyō, was a prominent figure in the development of the Bunjinga (literati painting) tradition in eighteenth-century Japan. This work, Bamboo and Rocks, demonstrates the artist's mastery of ink wash techniques, a style heavily influenced by Chinese literati ideals. The composition focuses on the juxtaposition of resilient bamboo stalks and solid, weathered rock formations, subjects that traditionally symbolise moral fortitude and endurance in East Asian art.
The bamboo is rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork, capturing the movement of leaves as they sway in an unseen breeze. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to translucent greys, creating a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective. The rocks are depicted with softer, textured washes, providing a stable visual anchor against the verticality of the bamboo. The use of negative space is deliberate, allowing the viewer to focus on the essential forms rather than extraneous detail.
Kien was a polymath, serving as a high-ranking samurai while dedicating his life to the arts. His approach to painting was not merely decorative, but an expression of personal cultivation and intellectual pursuit. By adopting the techniques of Chinese masters, he helped establish a new aesthetic language for Japanese artists who sought to move beyond the rigid conventions of the Kano school. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original silk surface, preserving the balance between the stark ink lines and the muted background. It is a representative example of the literati aesthetic, where simplicity and restraint are prioritised to evoke a quiet, contemplative mood. The work remains a clear example of the Bunjinga movement's focus on the expressive potential of the brush.
