This fan painting by the Qing Dynasty artist Zhu Lu demonstrates the traditional literati approach to ink wash painting. The work features a branch of bamboo rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork, positioned to the right of the composition. The bamboo leaves are executed with varying pressure, creating a sense of movement and natural grace. To the left, a column of cursive script calligraphy balances the visual weight of the foliage. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of the scholar-painter tradition, where the artist expresses personal character through the mastery of the brush.
The choice of the fan format dictates the composition, requiring the artist to work within a curved space. Zhu Lu uses the negative space of the paper to suggest the atmosphere, allowing the ink to breathe.
