Frantisek Kupka, a Czech artist who spent much of his career in Paris, produced this work during a period of transition in his practice. Before his move toward pure abstraction, Kupka explored themes of mythology and human connection to the natural world. The Ballad of Epona draws upon the Celtic deity of horses, fertility, and nature. The composition features two figures mounted on horses along a coastal stretch, rendered with a distinct divisionist technique.
