Backaskaill Bay on Orkney’s Sanday curves below green fields and long stone farm buildings, with pale sand and turquoise water beneath wide white cloud banks on a bright summer afternoon.
Backaskaill Bay lies on Sanday’s southern coast, beside the base of a low peninsula. Backaskaill Farm occupies the nearby grassland, around three kilometres from Broughtown. The coastal setting brings agricultural land close to a broad beach, with the low island terrain opening towards the surrounding Orkney sea.
A pale sandy curve encloses turquoise shallows beyond long grey farm buildings with blue roofs. Small cattle graze the green field behind the yard. Low walls and fine fence posts divide the middle ground, while larger pale rocks lie among near shrubs. Broad white clouds cross a high blue sky, suggesting bright summer afternoon weather above the open island coast.
