A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a quiet evening scene along the Tama River, featuring a weeping willow and a pale moon.
This woodblock print, titled Autumn Moon over Tama River (Tamagawa no shugetsu), originates from the series Eight Views in the Environs of Edo (Edo kinko hakkei no uchi), produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the late 1830s. The composition captures a serene evening scene along the Tama River, a subject that allowed Hiroshige to explore the interplay between natural elements and human activity. A large, pale moon dominates the upper sky, casting a soft glow over the riverbanks and the distant, muted mountain range.
In the foreground, a weeping willow tree leans gracefully over the water, its delicate branches rendered with precise, rhythmic lines. Below, figures are engaged in daily tasks: some fish along the sandy banks, while others navigate a small boat across the calm surface of the river. The use of bokashi, a technique involving the manual gradation of ink on the woodblock, creates a smooth transition in the sky from a deep blue at the top to a lighter hue near the horizon. This method provides a sense of atmospheric depth and quietude.
The print includes calligraphic text in the upper right, which integrates the title and poetic inscriptions into the visual design. Hiroshige utilised a balanced palette of blues, earthy browns, and soft creams to evoke the specific mood of an autumn evening. The scene reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between the inhabitants of Edo and the surrounding natural environment. By focusing on the quiet rhythms of the river, Hiroshige presents a view that is both observational and atmospheric. This work remains a representative example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, demonstrating the technical skill involved in multi-block printing during the Edo period.
