Autumn (Herfst) - Aegidius Sadeler (II)

This engraving, titled Autumn (Avtvmvs), belongs to a series depicting the four seasons. Aegidius Sadeler (II) was a highly skilled printmaker who spent much of his career in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. His technical precision is evident in the fine cross-hatching and varied line weights used to define the textures of the trees, the clothing of the figures, and the harvested fruit.

The composition is dense and busy, typical of the Northern Mannerist tradition. It presents a scene of agricultural labour, where figures are engaged in the gathering of apples. Some individuals climb into the branches to reach the fruit, while others fill baskets and load carts. The background features a distant village and rolling hills, providing a sense of scale and depth. The inclusion of ladders, baskets, and pack animals creates a narrative of seasonal productivity.

Sadeler often collaborated with other artists, and this work is based on a design by Pieter Stevens.
