A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the mythological hunt of the Calydonian Boar.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the climax of the Calydonian Boar hunt, a narrative drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The composition captures the moment the beast is brought down, with Atalanta and Meleager working in concert to dispatch the creature. Tempesta, a prolific printmaker based in Rome, utilised a precise etching technique to render the muscular tension of the figures and the rugged texture of the forest environment. The work is part of a larger series illustrating Ovidian myths, which were widely circulated across Europe during the seventeenth century.
The scene is organised with a focus on the central action. Atalanta, positioned to the right, draws her bow, while Meleager engages the boar with a spear. A hunting dog assists in the fray, adding to the sense of immediate movement. The background features stylised trees and foliage, typical of Tempesta's approach to setting, which provides a stage for the mythological drama without distracting from the primary subjects. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Calidonius ab Atalanta aper primo vulneratus a Meleagro interimitur', translates to 'The Calydonian boar, first wounded by Atalanta, is killed by Meleager', providing a clear textual anchor for the visual narrative.
Tempesta's work is characterised by a clarity of line and a systematic approach to shading, which allows for a high degree of legibility even in small-scale prints. His influence on the development of printmaking in Italy was considerable, as he bridged the gap between late Mannerist sensibilities and the emerging Baroque interest in dynamic, narrative-driven imagery. This print offers a view into the classical education and artistic interests of the period, demonstrating how ancient literature was translated into visual form for a contemporary audience.
