A detailed Northern Renaissance engraving depicting the moralising legend of the philosopher Aristotle being ridden by Phyllis.
This engraving by the German artist known as Master M. Z. depicts the popular medieval legend of Aristotle and Phyllis. The narrative concerns the philosopher Aristotle, who warns his pupil Alexander the Great against the perceived dangers of women. In retaliation, Phyllis, a mistress of Alexander, seduces the elderly philosopher. She convinces him to crawl on all fours, allowing her to ride upon his back like a horse. This scene serves as a moralising warning regarding the power of desire over reason.
The composition displays the technical precision characteristic of late fifteenth and early sixteenth-century German printmaking. Master M. Z. employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of Phyllis's elaborate feathered hat, her voluminous dress, and the flowing beard of the humbled philosopher. The background features a walled garden and a distant landscape, providing a sense of spatial depth that contrasts with the foreground action. Two figures observe the scene from a doorway on the left, acting as witnesses to the philosopher's humiliation.
Master M. Z. remains a somewhat enigmatic figure, identified primarily by the monogram found at the base of the print. His work aligns with the tradition of the German Little Masters, who produced small-scale, highly detailed engravings for a sophisticated audience. The print captures the tension between intellectual authority and physical impulse, a theme frequently explored in literature and visual arts during the period. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume in the drapery and figures, demonstrating the artist's command of the burin. This piece is a fine example of the period's interest in classical and medieval moral tales, rendered with the technical rigour of the Northern Renaissance.
