A detailed etching of the Arch of Septimius Severus in the Roman Forum, documenting the architectural state of the site in the late eighteenth century.
This etching by Johann Christian Jacob Friedrich captures the Arch of Septimius Severus within the Roman Forum. The composition reflects the tradition of the veduta, a genre popularised by artists who documented the ruins of antiquity for travellers on the Grand Tour. Friedrich employs precise line work to delineate the architectural details of the triumphal arch, the adjacent church of Santi Luca e Martina, and the solitary column of Phocas.
The print demonstrates a clear interest in the juxtaposition of ancient Roman structures with the later ecclesiastical additions that defined the Forum during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The artist uses a controlled hatching technique to suggest the texture of weathered stone and the play of light across the uneven ground of the site. Small figures are scattered throughout the foreground, providing a sense of scale to the massive masonry and the surrounding urban environment.
Friedrich, a German artist active in Italy, produced works that functioned as both souvenirs and records of archaeological interest. His approach to the subject is analytical, focusing on the structural integrity of the monuments rather than atmospheric effects. The inclusion of the church dome in the background provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal mass of the arch, creating a balanced view of the site as it appeared before the extensive excavations of the nineteenth century. This print offers a view into the historical appearance of Rome, documenting the state of the Forum when it was still partially buried and integrated into the daily life of the city.
