A refined ink-wash fan painting of an apricot branch by the Qing Dynasty master Wu Xizai, featuring elegant calligraphy and precise brushwork.
This fan painting by Wu Xizai, a prominent calligrapher and seal carver of the Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the synthesis of brushwork and botanical observation characteristic of the literati tradition. The composition follows the format of a folding fan, a popular medium for scholars to display their mastery of both ink wash painting and calligraphy.
The central subject is a flowering apricot branch, rendered with controlled, rhythmic ink strokes. Wu Xizai employs varying degrees of ink saturation to suggest the volume of the blossoms and the gnarled texture of the wood. The branches extend across the fan in a balanced, asymmetrical arrangement, leaving ample negative space that provides a sense of air and movement.
To the right, a column of elegant running-script calligraphy complements the visual weight of the branch. This integration of text and image is a hallmark of Chinese painting, where the artist's hand is present in both the descriptive depiction of nature and the rhythmic structure of the characters. The ink tones remain restrained, favouring a monochromatic palette that draws attention to the precision of the brushwork rather than colour.
Wu Xizai is widely recognised for his contributions to the development of the seal script, and this expertise informs the structural integrity of his painting. The lines are deliberate, showing a clear understanding of pressure and release. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, prioritising simplicity, technical discipline, and the expression of the artist's internal state through the depiction of seasonal flora. The fan format itself imposes a specific geometry, which the artist navigates with ease, ensuring the branch appears to grow naturally within the curved boundaries of the paper.
