A classical etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the myth of Apollo and Coronis, rendered with precise line work and narrative clarity.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the myth of Apollo and Coronis. Tempesta, a Florentine artist known for his prolific output of prints, captures the moment after the god has struck his lover with an arrow. The composition is structured with Apollo standing in the foreground, his bow still held, while the fallen figure of Coronis lies on the ground nearby. A bird, often identified as a crow or raven in the narrative, flies above, observing the aftermath of the divine act.
Tempesta employs a clear, narrative style typical of his illustrative work. The etching technique uses varied line weights to define the forms of the figures and the surrounding woodland. The background features a simplified, open space that directs the viewer's attention to the central action. The inclusion of the Latin inscription, 'Apollinis sagitta Coronis transfigitur', at the base of the print identifies the subject matter directly for the viewer. This work reflects the interest in classical mythology that permeated the visual culture of the early seventeenth century in Italy.
As a printmaker, Tempesta was instrumental in the dissemination of mythological and biblical narratives across Europe. His ability to condense complex literary themes into a single, readable image made his work popular among collectors and scholars. This particular print demonstrates his skill in balancing human anatomy with the requirements of a dramatic, outdoor setting. The work remains a representative example of the graphic arts during the transition from the late Renaissance to the Baroque period, showing a focus on clarity and narrative precision rather than excessive ornamentation.
